NEW DELHI: Two eminent Supreme Court lawyers have ascended to the positions of Members of Parliament (MPs). Advocate Bansuri Swaraj of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured her seat in the Lok Sabha from the New Delhi constituency, while Advocate Haris Beeran of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Kerala.
Advocate Haris Beeran, a native of Aluva in the Ernakulam district, has a commendable academic and professional background. His schooling was completed at Rajagiri School in Kalamassery, followed by an undergraduate education at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam. Beeran’s legal education culminated at the Government Law College in Ernakulam, equipping him with the knowledge and skills to embark on a distinguished legal career.

Since 1998, Haris Beeran has been a steadfast presence before the Supreme Court, initially starting his practice under the tutelage of Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave. His dedication and expertise earned him the position of Chairman of the National Lawyers Forum, a testament to his leadership within the legal community. During the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Beeran’s legal acumen was recognized as he served as counsel for both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Environment.

In parallel, Advocate Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, has carved out her path in the legal and political arena. Bansuri Swaraj enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2007 and practiced law at the Supreme Court until her foray into politics. Her legal practice included holding the office of Additional Advocate General of Haryana, a role she managed alongside her private practice.

Bansuri Swaraj’s legal career is marked by her involvement in several high-stakes cases. She has appeared in matters concerning Lalit Modi and the disqualification case of a Chandigarh mayoral candidate recently ruled upon by the Supreme Court. Her transition from a legal luminary to a political figure reflects her versatility and commitment to public service.
