A Supreme Court petition sparked demands for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the Tirupati Laddu controversy, with the Hindu Seva Samiti alleging the use of animal fat in the sacred prasadam. The controversy ignited nationwide outrage, raising concerns among devotees about the integrity of the Tirupati Balaji temple’s famous offering. Religious groups are calling for a thorough investigation to uphold the sanctity of the prasadam.
New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the Tirupati Laddu prasadam reached the Supreme Court, with a petition demanding the creation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate allegations that the sacred offering contains animal fat.
This issue sparked nationwide outrage, as devotees raise concerns about the integrity of the prasadam offered at the revered Tirupati Balaji temple.
The petition, submitted by Hindu Seva Samiti and its president, Surjit Singh Yadav, calls for a comprehensive probe. The group claims that the alleged contamination with animal fat and fish oil has deeply offended the religious sentiments of millions of devotees. Yadav emphasized the need for those responsible to be held criminally accountable and urged the Supreme Court to ensure that the issue is properly addressed.
The petition seeks the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the quality of ingredients used in Tirupati Laddu prasadam, following reports that animal fat was allegedly found in the ghee used for its preparation. The controversy erupted after tests purportedly confirmed the presence of non-vegetarian components in the prasadam, sparking political outcry across Andhra Pradesh and beyond.
In response to the allegations, prominent political figures such as Andhra Pradesh Congress President Y.S. Sharmila and several Union Ministers called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry. The recent petition filed in the Supreme Court intensifies the pressure on authorities to address the issue promptly.
The controversy gained widespread attention on social media, with many users urging Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud to step in and order a comprehensive investigation. Devotees have expressed outrage, demanding accountability from those responsible for the preparation and distribution of the prasadam.
Additionally, several social media users highlighted the historical and religious importance of the Tirupati Laddu, considered sacred by millions of pilgrims who visit the Tirumala temple each year. The alleged contamination has not only hurt religious sentiments but also raised questions about the quality control and oversight at one of India’s most prestigious and wealthiest temples.
Amid the ongoing controversy, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), responsible for managing the Tirupati temple, issued a statement on September 20, 2024, assuring devotees that the quality of the prasadam had been restored. TTD officials acknowledged lapses in the quality of the ghee used in preparing the laddu and confirmed they had implemented corrective actions to ensure the sacred offering remains pure.
In their statement, TTD stressed that the sanctity of the Tirupati Laddu had been “fully restored” and reiterated their commitment to upholding the highest standards in preparing prasadam. They also announced an internal investigation to address the issue and prevent future lapses in quality control.
The issue took a political turn when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu claimed his government found evidence of animal fat contamination in the Tirupati Laddu. This revelation triggered widespread demands for an official inquiry and sparked a political debate regarding the management of religious institutions in the state.
Leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties voiced concerns, calling for stricter oversight of temple operations and religious offerings. The push for a CBI investigation has heightened tensions between the Andhra Pradesh government and the temple’s management.
As the Supreme Court considers the petition for an SIT probe, devotees await the outcome, hoping it will restore faith in the sacred offering and uphold the integrity of religious practices.
Meanwhile, although TTD’s efforts to reassure the public may ease some concerns, the demand for accountability remains strong.
