The Supreme Court’s Law Clerks’ Moot Court Competition 2024 promotes advocacy skills among law clerks. Supreme Court Justice PS Narasimha and senior advocate Rebecca John presided over the final round, while the semi-finals were judged by panels of senior lawyers, including Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati.

New Delhi: Today (30 April): The Supreme Court marked its 75th year with a’moot court’ competition for law clerks, held over the weekend to enhance their advocacy skills.

“The initiative was aimed at enhancing advocacy skills of law clerks and law researchers working in the registry and chambers of the top court judges,” a release said.

Supreme Court Justice PS Narasimha and senior advocate Rebecca John presided over the final round, while the semi-finals were judged by panels of senior lawyers, including Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati.

Participants engaged in a fictional scenario concerning contract law and constitutional issues, tackling key legal themes such as the applicability of the Specific Relief Act, Indian Contract Act, and the constitutionality of legislative acts like the Telegraph Act of 1885, Telecommunications Act of 2023, and IT Act of 2000.

In the final rounds, teams delivered compelling arguments, demonstrating their profound legal knowledge and advocacy skills. The winning team, composed of Sayan Bhattacharya, Varun Dhond, and Ankita Gupta (Team No. 6), showcased exceptional legal reasoning and teamwork. Additionally, Sashi Barathvaj S and Raghav Sengupta were honored as the runners-up, with Sengupta receiving the Best Speaker award, highlighting the participants’ talent and dedication.

The success of the inaugural Law Clerks’ Moot Court Competition reaffirms the Supreme Court’s dedication to promoting legal education and professional growth among law clerks. These initiatives not only offer valuable learning opportunities but also contribute to the overall enhancement of legal discourse and advocacy skills within the legal community. With the competition setting a precedent, future editions are expected to attract broader participation and continue enriching India’s legal landscape.

Organized by the Supreme Court Center for Research & Planning, the inaugural Law Clerks’ Moot Court Competition on April 27th and 28th aimed to provide practical legal insights and hands-on experience to law clerks associated with various Supreme Court judges’ offices.

The competition’s success emphasized the Supreme Court’s commitment to fostering legal education and professional development among law clerks, contributing to the enhancement of legal discourse and advocacy skills within the legal fraternity.

Future editions of the competition are anticipated to attract wider participation and continue enriching the legal landscape in India.
