Justice Sanjay Karol noted India’s economic growth has exacerbated wealth inequality, driven by discrimination. He urged for philanthropy in education, emphasizing the responsibility of the wealthy to promote social justice.

New Delhi: India’s rapid economic growth in recent years has also widened the gap between the rich and the poor, Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Karol said on Thursday. He was speaking at a seminar marking the World Day of Social Justice and the launch of the KK Luthra & Nirmal Luthra Centre for Comparative Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Studies at OP Jindal Global University (JGU).
Growing Economic Inequality
Justice Karol highlighted the increasing concentration of wealth among a small percentage of the population, attributing it to systematic discrimination in many communities.
“India has made significant strides in economic growth, but the uncomfortable truth is that the gap between haves and have-nots has only widened in the past few years. In many communities, there is systematic discrimination, and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few has increased. The single percent holding the maximum resources hold a disproportionate amount of assets,” he said.
He further emphasized that economic privilege comes with a greater responsibility to pursue social equality and justice.

“I hope the Jindal Global University does not become a churner of currency but be philanthropic in nature,” he stated.
