On Sunday, 29 January the Supreme Court of India has rejected the Andhra Pradesh government’s appeal against the anticipatory bail granted to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader N. Chandrababu Naidu in the Amaravati Inner Ring Road (IRR) scam case. This decision was made by a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khana and Dipankar Datta.

The case revolves around allegations that during Naidu’s tenure as Chief Minister, there were irregularities in the master plan of Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. Specifically, the accusations involve the manipulation of the city’s master plan, the alignment of the Inner Ring Road, and the allocation of seed capital, purportedly to provide undue benefits to several companies.

The Andhra Pradesh government had challenged a High Court order dated January 10, which provided relief to Naidu by granting him anticipatory bail. However, the Supreme Court bench noted that an appeal in a related case, involving other accused and arising from the same FIR, had already been dismissed by the court in the previous year. Given this precedent, the bench expressed its reluctance to entertain the state government’s appeal.

This ruling marks a significant moment in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the Amaravati Inner Ring Road scam case. It underscores the complexities involved in high-profile political cases and the intricate legal processes that govern them. The Supreme Court’s decision is a notable development in the Indian judicial landscape, particularly in cases involving allegations of corruption and misuse of power at high government levels.
