Supreme Court Reinstates Solan Mayor Usha Sharma, Calls Disqualification 'Political Goondaism'

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday reinstated Solan Mayor Usha Sharma, ruling that her disqualification was an example of “political goondaism”. The court upheld its earlier August 20, 2024, order, which had stayed her removal, citing “male bias” in the decision to oust her.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh ruled that its previous interim stay on her disqualification was now made absolute. This means Sharma will remain in office for the remainder of her tenure.

“The interim order of August 20, 2024, is made absolute. Any interference with the order will invite consequences,”

the bench warned. The matter has now been adjourned for a year.

During the hearing, senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, representing the opposing side, attempted to intervene. However, the Supreme Court refused to entertain any objections, making it clear that the issue was a case of “political goondaism”.

The court also noted that it did not want to pass strictures at this stage, but its strong words signal a firm stance against unfair political disqualifications.

With this order, Usha Sharma has been officially reinstated as Solan Mayor, allowing her to continue in her post. The court’s sharp criticism of her removal could set a precedent against politically motivated disqualifications.

The case will now be reviewed after a year, but for now, Sharma remains in power, backed by the Supreme Court’s strong ruling against political interference.
