NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the anticipatory bail granted to Bhavani Revanna in a kidnapping case tied to sexual abuse allegations against her son, suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna.
A Bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan dismissed the Karnataka government’s appeal against the Karnataka High Court’s order, which had granted Bhavani Revanna pre-arrest bail. In July, the Supreme Court had issued notice on the Karnataka government’s plea challenging the High Court’s decision.
The Bench also advised the involved parties to refrain from politicizing the case.
Bhavani Revanna is accused of involvement in the kidnapping of a woman who was sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna. The kidnapping was allegedly an attempt to prevent the woman from filing a complaint.
Prajwal Revanna is currently under arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting multiple women and recording the assaults on video. In April this year, over 2,900 videos documenting the assaults surfaced after pen drives containing the footage were found in various public places across Karnataka.
Prajwal Revanna reportedly fled to Germany but returned to India on May 31 and was arrested upon his return. Both his parents, HD Revanna and Bhavani Revanna, have faced accusations of kidnapping a woman assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.
Additionally, Prajwal Revanna’s bail plea is still pending before the Karnataka High Court.
Meanwhile, a plea filed by the Special Investigating Team (SIT) to cancel the bail granted to HD Revanna is also awaiting a decision from the High Court.
