NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday postponed the hearing in the phone tapping case involving Additional SP Tirupatanna to January 2.

The bench, comprising Justice B.V. Nagaratna and Justice Koteshwar Singh, decided to adjourn the case to January 2.

Tirupatanna, who is seeking bail, had approached the apex court after being accused of illegal surveillance on multiple individuals.

The state government opposed his bail request, submitting a counter-affidavit outlining its objections.

During the proceedings, Tirupatanna’s legal team sought a postponement, citing technical challenges, while the state government’s lawyers requested a delay until after the Christmas holidays.

Earlier, Justice Juvvadi Sridevi of the Telangana High Court rejected the bail plea of Mekala Thirupathanna, a suspended additional superintendent of police currently in prison, in connection with a telephone tapping case.

While delivering the verdict, the judge observed that the case did not merit granting bail as investigators needed to analyze extensive data and submit a supplementary chargesheet. Justice Sridevi further noted that two key witnesses, including the prime accused T. Prabhakar Rao and another individual, remained absconding, and the data retrieved from Thirupathanna’s mobile phone required further examination.
