The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice regarding a Public Interest Litigation calling for nationwide restrictions on alcohol sales to prevent minors from easily accessing liquor. The petition emphasizes the connection between strict regulations and reduced social problems. New Delhi: The Supreme Court recently issued a notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting the imposition of nationwide restrictions on the buying and selling of liquor. This PIL, filed by the Community Against Drunken Driving, aims to address the ease with which minors and young people can access alcohol in India, an issue that the petitioner claims contributes to social problems and public health concerns.
The petitioner argued that
“even very young children are able to purchase liquor freely, without any restrictions or specific regulations in place.”
They highlighted that in many countries where the legal age for buying alcohol is set higher, crime rates tend to be lower. In support of this stance, the petitioner also referenced studies and data from the World Health Organization (WHO), suggesting that stricter alcohol regulations could help reduce alcohol-related harms and societal risks.
Justice Gavai, addressing the PIL, pointed out a potential challenge in enforcing such regulations.
“What can we do about this? They could simply send their servants to buy it instead of going themselves,”
he observed, indicating that practical issues might arise even if tighter restrictions were implemented.
In response, the petitioner acknowledged these challenges but reiterated their call for stricter regulations, arguing that the country needs more robust systems to curb underage drinking and the social issues linked to it. They stressed that current laws may not be sufficient to prevent easy access to alcohol by minors, and that enhancing these restrictions is crucial for public health and safety.
Following the discussion, the Supreme Court issued a notice limited to the aspect of implementing stricter restrictions on the purchase and sale of alcohol. This notice indicates that the Court will consider the proposal for tighter regulations but may need to weigh the practical implications of enforcing such measures across the country.
