Supreme Court of India Designates 39 Lawyers as Senior Advocates, 10 Out of The 39 are Women

NEW DELHI: Today(on 14th August), the Supreme Court of India has elevated 39 distinguished lawyers to the status of Senior Advocates, marking a notable advancement towards diversity and legal excellence. The announcement, made following a full court meeting earlier today, highlighted the inclusion of 10 women among the newly designated Senior Advocates, reflecting a positive shift towards gender inclusivity in the legal domain.

This recent designation comes in the wake of the court’s ongoing commitment to recognize and nurture legal expertise and professionalism.

“The acknowledgment of these 39 lawyers highlights the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to recognizing legal excellence and fostering diversity within the legal community.”

-noted a spokesperson from the court.

The ceremony, held in the esteemed presence of multiple justices, saw a blend of Advocates-on-Record and regular advocates being honored with the prestigious senior gown.

Out of an ambitious pool of 138 candidates, who applied for the distinction, 68 were Advocates-on-Record, underscoring the competitive and rigorous nature of the selection process. Among these, 71 lawyers had been shortlisted for interviews, leading to the final selection of the 39 outstanding legal professionals.

This list not only emphasizes the individual accomplishments of these lawyers but also indicates the judiciary’s efforts to foster a more balanced representation within its ranks. The inclusion of 10 women in this round is particularly noteworthy, as it mirrors the Supreme Court’s earlier decision in January 2024, where 56 lawyers, including 11 women, were elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate. Prior to that, the last round of designations occurred in December 2021, with 18 lawyers receiving the honour.
