Supreme Court Drama | "I Am Not A Beggar": Advocate Nedumpara’s Heated Exchange with Justice Rajesh Bindal Sparks Controversy

NEW DELHI: In a dramatic turn of events during a Supreme Court hearing today, senior advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara found himself in a tense and emotionally charged exchange with Justice Rajesh Bindal.

The courtroom, though virtual, was filled with intensity as the conversation escalated.

While arguing his matter via video conference, Advocate Nedumpara made a request to be allowed to appear physically for the proceedings.

He said clearly-

“My Lords, I will come and argue physically.”

However, Justice Rajesh Bindal promptly refused the request and replied-

“That option is gone now. That was at the beginning.”

Not taking the rejection lightly, Advocate Nedumpara responded passionately and firmly, expressing his disappointment over the treatment he was receiving.

He made a strong statement in his defense, saying-

“My Lords, I don’t want any charity. I am not a charity seeker or beggar, asking for charity. You should have some respect. I am senior to Your Lordship. I respect Your Lordship because Your Lordship is a first-generation lawyer. I respect Your Lordship.”

Despite the senior advocate’s emotional plea and repeated assertion of respect for the Bench, the court remained firm.

The bench, led by Justice Bindal, ended the matter shortly by saying-

“Sorry, dismissed.”

This incident has since caught the attention of legal professionals and netizens alike, due to the unusual and public nature of the disagreement between a senior lawyer and a sitting Supreme Court judge.

The comments made during the exchange have sparked discussions about courtroom decorum, respect between the Bar and the Bench, and the stress of virtual hearings in the current judicial environment.

Advocate Nedumpara’s words, especially “I am not a charity seeker or beggar”, have gone viral across legal and social media circles, prompting debates over judicial communication and seniority-based interactions.

The Supreme Court has not made any official remarks post the hearing, but the legal fraternity continues to buzz with reactions to what many are calling a rare and emotionally charged moment in India’s highest court.
