NEW DELHI: Senior advocate and SCBA president Kapil Sibal praised Justice C.T. Ravikumar, highlighting his integrity, simplicity, and dedication during his tenure as a Supreme Court judge.
Speaking at an event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to honor the retiring judge, Sibal lauded Justice Ravikumar for his love for cricket and his impeccable adherence to the principles of justice.
A Judge Who Played with a Straight Bat
Kapil Sibal described Justice Ravikumar’s approach to his role as a judge with an analogy to cricket, a sport the justice deeply loved.
“You are known for your love for cricket and soccer, regardless of the team… As a lover of cricket, you played your innings with a straight back. Bowled no googlies. And always gleaned by the rules of the game, which is what all lawyers want. I wish you all the very best for your next inning,”
-said Sibal.
This remark underlined Justice Ravikumar’s fairness and rule-based approach, which delighted lawyers and earned widespread respect.
Retirement and Reflections on Diversity in Judiciary
Justice Ravikumar retired on January 5, marking the end of his illustrious tenure in the apex court. Reflecting on his contributions, Sibal emphasized the importance of diversity among judges in shaping justice.
“It is through these multiple perspectives that imaginative and dynamic ideas of justice have emerged in the last 50 years. It is with great satisfaction that I have seen the bar and bench slowly grow to mirror this rich diversity of experience in our country and to see so many more first-generation lawyers find their place amongst the greats,”
-he noted.
Justice Ravikumar exemplified the power of hard work and perseverance. Rising through the ranks, his clarity of thought and unique voice significantly contributed to the development of law in India.

Sibal praised Justice Ravikumar’s exceptional work ethic during his three years in the Supreme Court.
“In your three years in this court, you have exemplified this precept with exceptional work ethic. You have brought clarity and coherence to the development of law, especially in the fields of criminal law, inheritance law and the law of evidence,”
-Sibal said.
The judge’s judgments stood out for their legal reasoning, structured approach, and clarity. His tenure often began with references to legal maxims, making his rulings accessible and understandable.
“Your judgments are well structured and understood by all. As a judge of the constitutional court, you have strived to give voice to the powerless. You have passed strong directions on fairness in criminal trials and on the need for the spirit of justice,”
-Sibal added.
Contributions to Landmark Decisions
Justice Ravikumar played a pivotal role in several important constitutional decisions. Sibal highlighted his contributions to cases involving complex legal, political, and ethical issues, such as:
- The Jallikattu verdict, which balanced animal rights and cultural traditions.
- The Anoop Barnawal decision, which upheld the independence of the election commissioner’s office.
- The Common Cause decision, which reinforced the right to die with dignity.
These judgments demonstrated Justice Ravikumar’s ability to navigate intricate legal and societal dilemmas with fairness and insight.

“The fact that you adorn an elevated platform in court is not reflected in your manner in court, which is empathetic and patient. Your colleagues and staff speak of your constant encouragement and your strongly affectionate nature, which you will always be remembered for,”
