NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India has expressed strong disapproval of the actions of the Madhya Pradesh police force, which has been accused of failing to protect victims and instead providing cover for alleged wrongdoers. This censure came during the hearing of a plea that sought contempt of court proceedings against officials for not adhering to judicial orders mandating police protection for a petitioner’s family.

Expressing anguish over withdrawal of police security, the bench told the state governemnt,

“Do you act under some political diktat? You are playing with the life of an innocent victim and protecting the offender. Restore the police security within 24-hours or ask your DGP and SP to present in court.”

The case at the center of this controversy involves the family of the petitioner, who has been subjected to threats from the husband of a sitting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). This MLA’s spouse is allegedly implicated in the death of the petitioner’s father in 2019, a case that has evidently not seen adequate police intervention.

The plea highlighted a disturbing scenario:

“Initially, the respondent provided security to the petitioner and his family, but suddenly, they withdrew it without giving any reason… the petitioner and his family are living in fear. Local MLA namely Smt. Rambai, who is called ‘Dabang’ (Muscleman) in the locality, has threatened the district collector and openly challenged the State. Thereafter, the State Government transferred the collector due to the pressure of this local MLA,” it stated.

This situation paints a grim picture of law and order in the region, where political influence and intimidation appear to override judicial directives and the safety of citizens. The Supreme Court’s censure of the Madhya Pradesh police for their inaction and apparent bias towards the accused over the victims is a significant remark on the state of policing and justice in the area. The case continues to unfold, with the Supreme Court’s involvement indicating the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a swift and just resolution.

Advocate Varun Thakur appeared for the petitioner.
