Supreme Court Collegium Recommends 3 New Judges for Top Court

NEW DELHI: On Monday, the Supreme Court collegium made an important decision about the future of the top court. The collegium has recommended the names of three judges for appointment to the Supreme Court of India.

These judges are:

This decision was made by the five-member collegium, which is headed by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai.

The recommendations are made to fill three judge vacancies in the Supreme Court.

These vacancies were created after the retirement (superannuation) of former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Abhay S Oka and Hrishikesh Roy.

In addition to these, another vacancy is expected very soon. Justice Bela M Trivedi will also retire on June 9.

As per the sanctioned strength, the Supreme Court is supposed to have 34 judges. But right now, the top court is working with only 31 judges.

The collegium said these appointments are necessary and urgent. In their own words,

“The Supreme Court of India is presently functioning with 31 Judges against the sanctioned strength of 34 Judges, leaving three clear vacancies.”

They further said,

“Another vacancy is going to arise very shortly due to the retirement of Mr Justice Bela M Trivedi on 09 June 2024.”

While explaining how they chose the names, the collegium stated,

“While recommending the names, the Collegium has taken into consideration the seniority of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges, apart from their merit and integrity.”

They also focused on giving proper representation to different High Courts and regions.

The collegium said,

“The Collegium has also taken into consideration the need to ensure diversity and inclusion in the composition of the Supreme Court by taking into account the parent High Court and the regional representation.”

With these new appointments, the court hopes to maintain smooth functioning and keep the number of judges closer to full strength. These names will now be sent to the government for final approval. Once approved, the three judges will officially join the Supreme Court of India.
