The Supreme Court designated eight retired High Court judges as Senior Advocates. This decision was made by a committee during a full court meeting on August 14. The recognition as Senior Advocates is a significant honour, acknowledging their contributions and expertise in the legal field.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India conferred the prestigious designation of Senior Advocate upon eight retired High Court judges, among them a former Acting Chief Justice.
This recognition is a significant honour in the legal profession, marking these individuals’ distinguished careers and contributions to the judiciary.
The following former judges have been honoured with the senior gown,
- Justice AM Babu – Former judge of the High Court of Kerala, known for his significant rulings and commitment to justice.
- Justice Gudiseva Shyam Prasad – Former judge of the High Court for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, who played a pivotal role in numerous landmark decisions.
- Justice M Venugopal – Former judge of the Madras High Court, recognized for his extensive legal acumen and judicious interpretations.
- Justice Mungeshwar Sahoo – Former judge of the Patna High Court, esteemed for his contributions to the legal field in Bihar.
- Justice Prakash Naik – Former judge of the Bombay High Court, whose decisions have left a lasting impact on the legal landscape in Maharashtra.
- Justice Shashikant Gupta – Former judge of the Allahabad High Court, who has been instrumental in delivering key judgments in Uttar Pradesh.
- Justice T Raja – Former Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, recognized for his leadership and judicial wisdom during his tenure.
- Justice Vivek Puri – Former judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, known for his fair and balanced approach to justice.
The decision to bestow this honour made by the Supreme Court’s Committee for the designation of Senior Advocates, following a full court meeting held on August 14, 2024. This meeting highlighted the importance of acknowledging the exemplary service and judicial contributions of these retired judges.

On the same day, the Supreme Court also designated 39 lawyers as Senior Advocates, a group that includes 10 distinguished women lawyers. This designation is a testament to their outstanding legal careers and their commitment to upholding the rule of law in India.
