Today, On 13th December, The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, declined an urgent hearing on a petition challenging the conferment of the M.S. Subbulakshmi Award to T.M. Krishna. The petition argued that Krishna was not deserving of the honor. In response, CJI Khanna remarked, “They can always take back the award.” The case continues to spark debate over the award’s selection process.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition contesting a Madras High Court decision that allows the prestigious M S Subbulakshmi award to be presented to renowned Carnatic musician T M Krishna.

Additional Solicitor General N. Venkataraman raised the issue before a bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, highlighting the urgency as the award ceremony is set for December 15.

Venkataraman described the situation as extraordinary, noting that Krishna had allegedly written articles that disparaged Subbulakshmi.

The Court scheduled the appeal for December 16.

When the ASG pointed out that the high court had issued its ruling on Friday and that the case could become moot by then, the Chief Justice responded,

“They can always take back the award. You can recall the award if necessary.”

The suit filed by V. Srinivasan, Subbulakshmi’s grandson, who challenged the granting of the Sankita Kalanidhi M S Subbulakshmi award to Krishna. Srinivasan argued that Krishna’s “vile, vituperative and scandalous attacks” against his grandmother on social media had tarnished her reputation, and thus he should not receive the award.

The case revolves around a petition challenging the conferment of the prestigious M.S. Subbulakshmi Award to Carnatic musician T.M. Krishna.

The petitioner questioned Krishna’s eligibility for the honor, citing concerns about his actions and statements that they believe may not align with the values the award represents.

The plea presented in the Supreme Court, seeking an urgent hearing to block the award ceremony.

However, the Court, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, refused to grant an immediate hearing, stating there was no extraordinary situation warranting urgent intervention. The decision follows ongoing debates in the cultural and legal communities, with some expressing concerns about social media attacks targeting Krishna’s reputation.
