Singapore Supreme Court Judge Judith Prakash Joins Constitution Bench With CJI

NEW DELHI: Singapore Supreme Court Judge Judith Prakash joined the Constitution bench Today, tasked with examining whether the royalties collected by the Centre from mineral rights should be classified as tax, aligning with a precedent set by a seven-judge bench in 1989.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the nine-judge bench, announced Justice Prakash’s participation, referring to her as a guest member.

“A few months back, Singapore Supreme Court Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon was with us. Now, we have Justice Judith Prakash amongst us. She has come here for the Delhi Arbitration Weekend, where she will be delivering the keynote address,”
-the CJI said while welcoming Justice Prakash.

CJ Chandrachud highlighted Justice Prakash’s presence, noting the recent participation of Singapore Supreme Court Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon. He mentioned that Justice Prakash was attending the Delhi Arbitration Weekend, where she would deliver the keynote address.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta extended his greetings to Justice Prakash, welcoming her to the bench. Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing the bar in the royalty matter, expressed his warm welcome to Justice Prakash, stating,

“It will be my honour and privilege to address her, even though it will be on Indian constitutional law.”

The Delhi Arbitration Weekend, hosted from March 6 to 10, is organized by the Delhi International Arbitration Centre.
