The Supreme Court set to assess uniform guidelines for lawyer bodies nationwide. The review aims to establish consistent standards across the country’s legal associations. New Delhi: The Supreme Court, led by Justice Surya Kant, chosen to examine the formulation of guidelines for advocates’ associations nationwide to ensure uniform and democratic admission regulations. The proceedings have been named ‘In Re: Strengthening of the Institution of Bar Associations.’
On April 16, the court included significant Bar associations and organizations such as the Tamil Nadu Bar Council and the Madras High Court Advocates Association as parties in the case. The Madras Bar Association served notice in March. A comprehensive hearing for the case slated for July 16 at 2:30 p.m.

The court, through its order, explicitly stated that,
“Its primary objective to establish general guidelines to bolster and elevate the status while improving the operations of Bar associations nationwide.”
Senior advocates such as Shekhar Naphade and A. Sirajuddin representing parties in this case, with Advocate V. Balaji appearing for the Madras Bar Association. Mr. Naphade emphasized that standardized guidelines would enhance the operations of advocates’ bodies and associations.

Originally initiated through a petition by advocate Elephant G. Rajendran against a senior lawyer and the Madras Bar Association, the case took a turn when Mr. Rajendran withdrew the allegations in March.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court shifted its focus solely towards establishing uniform guidelines.
The Supreme Court’s decision to review nationwide uniform guidelines for lawyer organizations signifies a pivotal step towards standardizing regulations within the legal profession across the country.
