The clarification followed a malicious tweet on X (formerly Twitter) that sought to link the CJI’s family member with a medical lobby in Bengal ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the Kolkata rape and murder case. The post was described as ill-intended, factually inaccurate, and aimed at maligning the judiciary. The Supreme Court registry announced that a complaint has been filed with the Delhi Police regarding the matter.

NEW DELHI: On Monday (9th Sept), the Supreme Court registry clarified that a social media message circulating about Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s wife is “factually incorrect.” The registry confirmed that CJI’s wife is not connected to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s personal physician.
A viral WhatsApp message attempting to connect CJI DY Chandrachud’s wife with the alleged leader of the “north Bengal lobby,” Shyamapada Das, has led Bengal police to issue a strong warning against spreading harmful disinformation.
The “north Bengal lobby” reportedly consists of doctors, mostly alumni of North Bengal Medical College near Siliguri, who are said to exert influence over the Bengal health department.
In response to the viral message, the Bengal police issued a statement on their ‘X’ handle on Saturday, warning:
“Misusing the right to free speech to spread baseless lies, especially against the highest court, is illegal and punishable. The harshest legal action will be taken against those attempting to tarnish the judiciary’s image.”

A post on X claims that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and his family holidayed in Malaysia and Bangkok with the Chief Minister’s nephew. However, sources reveal that they have never been to Thailand.
The CJI did visit Kuala Lumpur in 2003 for a cancer survivors conference, but his wife has never been there, and he hasn’t visited Thailand in 21 years. Since joining the top court in 2016, Justice Chandrachud has not taken any private trips abroad, with all his travels being official.
