NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday(24th Sept) denied an urgent hearing for businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall’s bail plea, which challenges the Delhi High Court’s decision to deny him bail in a corruption case related to an excise policy scam.
Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan rejected the request made by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi for an expedited hearing.
Singhvi contended that Dhall had been in custody for an extended period and had already been granted regular bail in a related money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate.
The bench replied, “We have to think about poor litigants as well. We cannot simply bypass the Supreme Court’s procedures,” and noted that the case would be addressed in the second week of October.
“He was granted regular bail in the money laundering case brought by the Enforcement Directorate. The findings in a more serious case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act are in my favor. I am also requesting interim bail,”
Singhvi stated.
Earlier, on September 17, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and set a hearing for November regarding Dhall’s plea.
Dhall was arrested by the CBI in April last year on charges of conspiracy in the alleged scam and facilitating kickbacks to the Aam Aadmi Party. The high court dismissed Dhall’s bail appeal on June 4, citing the serious nature of the allegations.
