The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the bail plea of Abbas Ansari, son of Mukhtar Ansari, in connection with a money laundering case. The bench headed by Justices Sandeep Mehta and MM Sundresh.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today (14th Aug) issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning the bail plea of Abbas Ansari, son of politician Mukhtar Ansari, who is connected in a money laundering case. The decision followed after a prior request by the Supreme Court in July, seeking a response from the Uttar Pradesh Government regarding the case.

A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking a response to Ansari’s challenge against the High Court’s ruling.

On May 9, the High Court had denied Ansari’s bail plea, citing strong evidence of a money trail linked to him, with flow charts indicating the origin of funds that ended up in his accounts.

The court also noted that the money trail connected Ansari to two firms allegedly involved in money laundering: M/s Vikas Construction and M/s Aaghaaz. The ED had booked Ansari on November 4, 2022, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, based on three prior cases. Ansari is currently incarcerated in Kasganj jail.

Abbas Ansari stands accused of extorting money from multiple individuals by making threats through his wife’s mobile phone. His wife allegedly visited him at Chitrakoot district jail, where Ansari is currently in Custody, and facilitated these communications.

On May 1, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court denied Ansari’s request for bail in connection with the case. Following this rejection, Ansari took the matter to the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s decision.

The allegations against Ansari, who serves as an MLA from the Mau assembly constituency, date back to February 2023, when an FIR was filed against him. The FIR claims that Ansari’s wife repeatedly visited him in jail without adhering to the established formalities and restrictions. This misconduct was noted by the High Court in its judgment.
