The Supreme Court is set to examine the bail request of former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji on April 1,subsequent to his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate last year on charges of money laundering. Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan will preside over the bench that will hear Balaji’s plea, challenging the rejection of his second bail petition by the Madras High Court on February 28.

In its ruling, the High court expressed concerns about releasing Balaji on bail, suggesting it might send the wrong message and oppose the broader public interest. Rather than granting bail, the high court suggested speeding up the trial, instructing the Chennai Principal Special Court to wrap up the case within three months.

Balaji, a former Transport Minister under the AIADMK government, was arrested on June 14 for his involvement in a money laundering case associated with a cash-for-jobs scam. The Enforcement Directorate submitted a detailed 3,000-page charge sheet against him on August 12.

Despite previous attempts, Balaji’s bail pleas were dismissed by both the high court and a local court. The judiciary is committed to ensur a fair and speedy trial, following Supreme Court guidelines, and emphasizing the urgency of resolving this significant case promptly.

Senthil Balaji was arrested on June 14 following interrogation by the ED regarding alleged money laundering activities during his tenure as transport minister for the AIADMK government from 2011 to 2015.

Since his arrest, Balaji has faced a challenging legal battle, with multiple bail pleas being dismissed by the courts, reflecting the severity of the charges against him and the ongoing investigation’s intensity.
The courts’ consistent denial of bail highlights the seriousness of the case and the judiciary’s dedication to conducting a thorough and fair investigation.
