NEW DELHI: On Tuesday (24th Sept): The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of nine advocates as judges of the Bombay High Court. Those recommended include:

  • Rajesh Sudhakar Datar
  • Sachin Shivajirao Deshmukh
  • Gautam Ashwin Ankhad
  • Mahendra Madhavrao Nerilkar
  • Nivedita Prakash Mehta
  • Prafulla Surendra Kumar Khubalkar
  • Ashwin Damodar Bhobe
  • Rohit Wasudeo Joshi
  • Advait Mahendra Sethna

These names were submitted by the High Court Collegium in two resolutions, dated January 19 and April 19, respectively.

After consulting with two senior-most colleagues, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court recommended the advocates for elevation to judges.

The Supreme Court Collegium, after evaluating the candidates’ merit and reviewing the Department of Justice’s comments, found all nine suitable for appointment.

Currently, the Bombay High Court operates with 66 judges, although its sanctioned capacity is 94.

In a separate resolution, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), recommended the appointment of Justice Narendar G as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand, following the retirement of Justice Ritu Bahri on October 10, 2024.

Justice Narendar G has served as a judge of the Karnataka High Court since January 2, 2015, and was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on October 30, 2023, where he currently serves. He is the senior-most judge from his parent court, the Karnataka High Court, and belongs to the Other Backward Class (OBC). Prior to his elevation as a judge, he practiced before the Karnataka High Court.

“He is an experienced judge with significant experience in both the judicial and administrative functions of the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh High Courts. Currently, there is no representation from the Karnataka High Court among the Chief Justices of the High Courts. The Collegium believes Justice Narendar G is fully fit and suitable to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand,” the Collegium noted.

In a separate resolution, the Collegium also recommended the appointment of two judicial officers, Shashi Bhushan Prasad Singh and Ashok Kumar Pandey, as judges of the High Court of Judicature at Patna, with their seniority to be determined in accordance with established practice.
