The Supreme Court Collegium, chaired by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has recommended Justice K. Vinod Chandran for elevation to the Supreme Court. This decision, pending government approval, is based on his extensive judicial experience and seniority, particularly highlighting his position as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. He ranks 13th in the national seniority list among High Court Judges.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, has recommended the elevation of Justice K. Vinod Chandran as a Judge of the Supreme Court. The decision was made during a meeting held on January 7 and is now pending approval by the Central Government.

The Collegium deliberated on the eligibility of Chief Justices and senior Judges from various High Courts. Among the candidates, Justice Chandran stood out for his extensive judicial experience and seniority.

Justice K. Vinod Chandran began his judicial career with an appointment as a Judge of the Kerala High Court on November 8, 2011. He was later elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 29, 2023, where he has served diligently for over a year.

The Collegium highlighted his more than 11 years of experience as a High Court Judge and his tenure as the Chief Justice of a significant High Court. His expertise spans various areas of law, further cementing his suitability for elevation to the Supreme Court.

While recommending Justice Chandran, the Collegium also considered the lack of representation from the Kerala High Court on the Supreme Court Bench. In the all-India seniority list of High Court Judges, Justice Chandran is ranked 13th and holds the top seniority position among Judges from the Kerala High Court.

The Central Government will now review the Collegium’s recommendation and convey its decision. If approved, Justice Chandran will bring his extensive legal acumen and leadership to the nation’s highest judicial body.

The Collegium’s statement underscored its unanimous conclusion: “Justice K. Vinod Chandran should be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”
