Justice K Vinod Chandran, formerly the Chief Justice of Patna High Court, Today (Jan 16) sworn in as a Supreme Court judge by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. This raises the Supreme Court’s working strength to 33 out of its sanctioned 34 judges. His elevation follows the approval of the apex court collegium’s recommendation by the Centre on January 13.

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, gave the oath of office to Justice K Vinod Chandran on Thursday, making him a judge of the Supreme Court.
Before this, Justice K Vinod Chandran served as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
With Justice Chandran taking the oath, the number of working judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 33.
The total sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice of India, is 34.

The process for Justice Chandran’s elevation began when the Central Government approved the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on January 13.
The collegium, a five-judge panel led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, met on January 7 to decide and put forward his name for the position.
Justice K Vinod Chandran’s judicial career began when he was appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court on November 8, 2011.
Later, he was promoted to the position of Chief Justice of Patna High Court on March 29, 2023.
At the Supreme Court, Justice Chandran will have a term till April 25, 2028.
