Justice Singh is currently the Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Justice Mahadevan serves as the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

NEW DELHI: On Thursday (11th July): The Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, recommended the elevation of high court judges N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan to the Supreme Court.
Justice Singh is currently the Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Justice Mahadevan serves as the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
The collegium highlighted Justice Singh’s judicial performance, administrative skills, integrity, and merit as key factors for his recommendation. The collegium also considered factors like seniority, merit, performance, integrity, and the need for diversity and representation from marginalized communities in its recommendations.
Justice Mahadevan, who belongs to a backward community in Tamil Nadu, was recommended to enhance diversity in the Supreme Court. He is the third-ranking judge in the Madras High Court.

“The collegium noted that Justice R Mahadevan ranks third among the current judges of the Madras High Court, including those serving as chief justices in other courts,”
it stated.
“At this juncture, the collegium prioritized Justice R Mahadevan’s candidature to ensure representation for the backward community,”
the apex court collegium said.
The Supreme Court currently operates with 32 judges out of a sanctioned strength of 34.

APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF JUSTICES IN HIGH COURTS
The collegium also recommended the appointment of chief justices for eight high courts:
- Justice Manmohan will continue as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
- Justice M S Ramachandra Rao will move from the Himachal High Court to the Jharkhand High Court as its Chief Justice.
- Justice Rajiv Shakdher will become the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
- Justice Suresh Kait will be the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
- Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia will be the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
- Justice Nitin Jamdar will be the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

Similarly, the collegium approved the appointment of Justice KR Shriram as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
Additionally, the collegium recommended Justice Tashi Rabstan for the position of Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
