“Her Dreams Are Very Big”: Supreme Court Slams Rs 5 Crore Alimony Demand After One-Year Marriage

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court recently expressed disapproval of a woman’s demand for Rs 5 crore as alimony for the dissolution of her marriage, which lasted just one year and two months. A bench headed by Justice JB Pardiwala described the demand as “unreasonable” and warned that such a stance could invite “very harsh orders.”

Case Background

The husband, an engineer working with Amazon, had offered Rs 35 lakhs for settlement. However, his wife allegedly sought Rs 5 crore. The woman’s counsel later clarified that the demand had been reduced during the mediation process at the Supreme Court mediation center.

Justice Pardiwala, while addressing the husband’s counsel, cautioned against reconciliation, remarking:

“You will be making a blunder by calling her back. You won’t be able to keep her. Her dreams are very big.”

Court’s Observations

The bench noted that the marriage lasted for just about a year, making such a high settlement demand excessive. Justice Pardiwala emphasized that the court expected both parties to arrive at a “reasonable” settlement to avoid protracted litigation.

“If such is going to be the stance of the wife, we may have to pass some orders which she may not like. We expect the wife to put forward reasonable demands and put an end to this litigation,”

the bench observed.

Directions from the Court:

The Supreme Court directed the estranged couple to return to the mediation center for further discussions. Both parties have been asked to appear before the mediation center on October 5, and the matter will be revisited after the mediation report is submitted.
