River Pollution in Rajasthan| Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance , CJI to Decide on PIL

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday took suo motu cognizance of the issue of river pollution in Rajasthan. The decision underscores the judiciary’s proactive role in addressing environmental concerns that directly impact public health and ecology.

A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta directed the court registry to register a public interest litigation (PIL) petition on the matter.

While making the announcement, Justice Nath observed:

“Hon’ble CJI will take a call and pass appropriate order.”

It is not yet clear whether the apex court has taken cognizance of pollution in a specific river or if the action extends to multiple rivers in Rajasthan. The matter will be clarified once the Chief Justice of India (CJI) examines the PIL and issues directions.

River Pollution in Rajasthan: A Persistent Issue

Rajasthan has been grappling with river pollution for decades. Mongabay India recently reported on pollution in the Jojari River, highlighting that nearly 50 villages and hamlets have been suffering for close to two decades due to the river’s contamination. Local communities have consistently raised concerns about health hazards, loss of livelihood, and the lack of effective government action.
