Following the retirement of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, the composition of the Supreme Court Collegium has undergone significant changes, with Justice Aniruddha Bose joining the five-judge collegium and Justice B.R. Gavai being inducted into the three-judge collegium.

Justice Aniruddha Bose’s induction into the five-judge Supreme Court Collegium, which is responsible for recommending names for elevation to the Supreme Court and the transfer of high court judges, marks a notable shift in the judiciary’s upper echelons. This collegium now consists of Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices Sanjeev Khanna, B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, and Justice Bose himself. However, Justice Bose’s tenure in the collegium will be relatively short, as he is set to retire on April 10 next year.

The retirement of Justice Kaul has also led to Justice Gavai joining the three-judge collegium, which includes the CJI and Justice Khanna. This collegium plays a crucial role in recommending names for the appointment of judges to high courts.

Justice Kaul’s departure from the Supreme Court has created a vacancy in the apex court. Under the leadership of CJI Chandrachud, the collegium has made a total of 14 appointments to the Supreme Court. With the upcoming retirements of Justices Bose, A.S. Bopanna, and Hima Kohli on April 10, May 19, and September 1 next year, respectively, the Supreme Court is poised to welcome four more judges during the tenure of CJI Chandrachud, who is scheduled to retire on November 10 next year.

These changes in the collegium are significant as they influence the process of judicial appointments and transfers, which are vital for the functioning and integrity of the judiciary. The new composition of the collegium under CJI Chandrachud’s leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s judicial landscape.
