Today, On 22nd December, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant urged lawyers to approach the Supreme Court Registry for urgent hearings. He emphasized that lawyers must provide valid reasons for urgency so that the cases can be properly scrutinised and listed accordingly.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant urged lawyers to contact the Supreme Court Registry for the urgent hearing of cases, emphasizing that they should provide reasons for the urgency so the matters can be appropriately listed.

While presiding over a special vacation bench with Justice Joymalya Bagchi to address pressing issues requiring immediate judicial attention, the CJI made three key remarks.

As hearings began, lawyers sought urgent listings for their cases.

CJI Kant stated,

“Instead of mentioning, furnish reasons to Registry. The reasons will be scrutinised; if found urgent, it shall be tentatively listed either on December 26 or December 29.”

This special session was organized to facilitate the timely examination of urgent cases during the vacation period.

On the previous Friday, CJI Kant expressed his willingness to convene on December 22, which marks the start of the Christmas and New Year holidays for the Supreme Court, to hear urgent matters.

Additionally, it was clarified that Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant will preside over a special vacation bench of the Supreme Court on December 22, 2025, to hear urgent matters requiring immediate judicial intervention during the court’s Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to the cause list uploaded on the Supreme Court’s official website, the special vacation bench will comprise CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

The bench will take up 17 urgent cases, including both criminal and civil matters.

The Supreme Court will remain closed for the Christmas and New Year holidays from December 22, 2025, to January 2, 2026. Despite the vacation, the CJI’s decision to hold a special sitting reflects the judiciary’s commitment to addressing urgent legal issues without delay.
