New Delhi: The Central government on Monday (Jan 13th) approved the elevation of Patna High Court Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran as a judge of the Supreme Court. The announcement was made by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X (formerly Twitter).

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice, Patna High Court as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,”

Meghwal stated in his post.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Chandran’s elevation to the apex court on January 7, 2024. The recommendation highlighted his extensive judicial experience and seniority, alongside the fact that the Kerala High Court currently lacks representation in the Supreme Court.

“He has served as a Judge of the High Court for more than 11 years and as a Chief Justice of a big High Court for more than a year. During his long tenure, Justice Chandran has acquired significant experience in diverse fields of law,”

the Collegium noted in its resolution.

Justice K Vinod Chandran began his judicial career as a judge of the Kerala High Court on November 8, 2011. He was later elevated as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 23, 2023, a role he has served in for over a year.

The Collegium underscored his all-India seniority and his position as the most senior judge from the Kerala High Court.

“Mr. Justice Chandran stands at Sl. No. 13 in the combined all-India seniority of High Court Judges. In the seniority of Judges hailing from the High Court of Kerala, Mr. Justice K. Vinod Chandran stands at Sl. No. 1,”

the Collegium stated.

The Collegium also pointed out the absence of representation from the Kerala High Court in the Supreme Court and expressed confidence in Justice Chandran’s ability to contribute to the nation’s judiciary at the highest level.
