BREAKING | CJI Sanjiv Khanna Extends New Year Greetings, Asks Lawyers To File Physical Letters For Urgent Listings

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India reopened after its winter vacation, which lasted from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna began the day’s proceedings by extending warm wishes to the lawyers and litigants.

“I wish you all a happy new year. May you have a happy new year, your families…”,

-the CJI said during his opening remarks, reflecting his cordial and considerate approach to starting the court’s new year.

Issues with Mentioning System

During the proceedings, CJI Khanna acknowledged an issue with the email system used for case mentioning. He stated:
“I am told the email for mentioning is not working. You can move the physical letters accordingly.”

The CJI clarified that these letters would be reviewed in the afternoon, and necessary orders for listing cases would be issued.

Changes in the Mentioning Process

After assuming office as the Chief Justice, Justice Khanna introduced reforms in the system of mentioning urgent matters before the Supreme Court. He discontinued the practice of oral submissions for urgent listings. Instead, he introduced a more structured approach where advocates were required to send emails or write letters for case mentions.

This move streamlined the process and eliminated unnecessary chaos during court proceedings.

Understanding Mentioning in the Supreme Court

Usually, lawyers present their cases before the bench led by the Chief Justice at the beginning of the day’s proceedings. This is done to request “out-of-turn listings” or urgent hearings for specific cases. The mentioning process ensures that cases requiring immediate attention are addressed without delay.
