The CJI also informed that the email system for mentioning cases was not functioning, advising lawyers to submit physical letters instead. These letters would be reviewed in the afternoon, and necessary orders for listing would be issued.

NEW DELHI: On January 2, 2025, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna extended New Year greetings to lawyers and litigants as the Supreme Court resumed its sessions after the winter break, which lasted from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025.

“I wish you all a happy new year. May you and your families have a joyous year ahead,” the CJI said at the start of the day’s proceedings.

The CJI also informed that the email system for mentioning cases was not functioning, advising lawyers to submit physical letters instead. These letters would be reviewed in the afternoon, and necessary orders for listing would be issued.

Since assuming office, Justice Khanna discontinued the practice of oral submissions for urgent case listings. He had previously stated that requests for urgent hearings would only be considered if lawyers either sent emails or wrote letters for the purpose.

On November 12, 2024, the Chief Justice of India announced that advocates would no longer be allowed to make verbal requests for urgent hearings in open court. Instead, such requests must be submitted in writing, either via email or on a written slip, clearly stating the reasons for the urgency.

The CJI emphasized, “No more written or oral mentionings. Only through email or written slip, and simply state the reasons for urgency,” during the court session.

Typically, lawyers would mention their cases at the beginning of the day’s proceedings before the CJI-led bench for out-of-turn hearings on urgent matters.
