According to a circular issued on Saturday, miscellaneous matters, including transfer petitions and bail pleas, will now be listed for hearings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has announced today(16th Nov) that it will no longer schedule regular matters, which require lengthy final hearings, on Wednesdays and Thursdays days, earlier it was reserved for such cases.
According to a circular issued on Saturday, miscellaneous matters, including transfer petitions and bail pleas, will now be listed for hearings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
“Going forward, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, after notice, miscellaneous matters, including transfer petitions and bail pleas, will be taken up. No regular hearing matters will be listed on Wednesdays and Thursdays until further orders,”
the circular clarified.
Additionally, special bench matters or part-heard cases, whether categorized as miscellaneous or regular hearings, directed to be scheduled on these three days will be heard in the post-lunch session or as per instructions from the competent authority.
This arrangement, aimed at reducing the pendency of cases which currently stands at 83,410 will remain in effect until further notice.
Earlier, the CJI announced this week stated that “No written or oral mentionings anymore. Only in email or written slip. Just state the reasons of urgency,”. Instead, urgent hearing requests must be submitted “only in email or written slip,” with specific reasons provided for the urgency.
Previously, during former CJI DY Chandrachud’s tenure, oral mentioning allowed advocates to verbally request urgent listings, commonly in critical cases involving demolitions or imminent arrests.
This reform marks the first major administrative change introduced under Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, who assumed office as the 51st CJI on November 11.
