NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today rejected a request related to the tragic stampede that happened at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15. The petition was filed by Anand Legal Aid Forum Trust, which claimed that nearly 200 people lost their lives in the incident, based on eyewitness accounts.

However, official reports state that around 18 people died.

A panel of judges, including Justice BR Gavai and Justice PK Mishra, decided not to take up the case and instead advised the petitioner to approach the High Court.

The court asked for proof regarding the claims and suggested that the affected families should seek justice through legal channels.

“Let the persons who are affected approach the court,”

-the court stated.

The judges also questioned whether the petitioner was accusing the State government of completely ignoring the tragedy.

The petitioner was represented by Advocate Abhijeet Anand from Anand Legal Aid Forum Trust. The stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of February 15 at 10 p.m. when lakhs of devotees were traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival.

The station became overcrowded, leading to chaos and loss of lives.

After the incident, Indian Railways announced financial compensation for the victims’ families. The families of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh, while those who are seriously injured will get Rs 2.5 lakh, and people with minor injuries will be given Rs 1 lakh.

To investigate the cause of the incident, railway authorities formed a high-level committee. Additionally, the Ministry of Railways has decided to create permanent holding areas at around 60 railway stations across the country that frequently experience heavy crowds.
