NEW DELHI: Today (23rd July): The Supreme Court was informed by a panel of three experts from IIT Delhi that a disputed physics question from the NEET-UG 2024 exam had only one correct answer, not two.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala, during a Monday hearing, revealed that IIT Delhi’s Director Rangan Banerjee had assembled a team of experts who concluded that the correct answer was option four, which states, “Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.”
“The committee has clearly stated that there is only one correct option, which is option four (4). Therefore, the National Testing Agency (NTA) was accurate in its answer key, which listed option four (4) as the correct answer,”
the bench stated.
The court noted that this conclusion validates the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) answer key, which had marked option four as correct. The hearing is ongoing, with Solicitor General Tushar Mehta representing the Centre and NTA.
The Supreme Court is reviewing various petitions that challenge the NEET-UG due to issues such as question paper leaks and alleged malpractice. On Monday, the court faced a complex situation regarding a physics question, where claims were made that there were two correct answers, leading to different scores for various groups of students.
Some argue that this discrepancy could significantly affect the merit list. In response, the court had requested IIT Delhi to form a team of experts to address the issue.
Delhi University Associate Professor and IIT Madras alumnus Naveen Gaur, also consulted on the matter, confirmed that option four is the sole correct answer.
Over 23.33 lakh students appeared for the test on May 5 at 4,750 centers across 571 cities, including 14 abroad. The NEET-UG, conducted by the NTA, is used for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in both government and private institutions nationwide.
