TAMIL NADU: A Tamil Nadu NEET-UG candidate has moved the Supreme Court after losing her MBBS admission due to failure to pay the fee within the prescribed deadline. The matter highlights concerns about payment deadlines and accessibility for students facing financial and technical challenges.
Background of the Case
The candidate, who appeared for NEET UG 2025–26, scored 251 marks and was allotted a seat at Madha Medical College and Research Institute during the third round of counselling on November 3, 2025. According to the official schedule, candidates were required to download their allotment order and complete the admission process by November 8, 2025.
The petitioner claimed that her family could only arrange the ₹15 lakh admission fee on the last day. Since November 8 was a second Saturday, NEFT/RTGS transactions with the authorized banks were not possible. Despite attempts to contact the college, she did not receive a response, so her seat was treated as vacant and moved to the stray vacancy round.
High Court Proceedings
Initially, a single judge of the Madras High Court, Justice Anand Venkatesh, had granted her relief, citing her high NEET score and directing her admission to the college. However, the Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and Mohammed Shaffiq overturned this order, emphasizing that the timelines in the prospectus were binding and could not be relaxed for individual cases.
The judges personally advised the student not to lose heart and suggested she explore alternate academic options.
Supreme Court Hearing
Her counsel approached the Supreme Court, stressing the immediacy of the issue as stray counselling rounds were underway. He highlighted that the candidate was unable to complete the payment due to limited access to authorized banks.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, along with Justices K. Vinod Chandran and N.V. Anjaria, agreed to list the petition for hearing on November 19, 2025.
Issues in the Petition
- Financial Constraints – The candidate managed to arrange ₹15 lakh only on the last day of the payment window.
- Technical Limitations – The NEFT/RTGS system and limited bank authorizations prevented timely payment.
- Strict Adherence to Timelines – The Division Bench’s stance raises concerns about flexibility in medical college admission rules.
