"NEET Results Should Not Be Scrapped, Re-Examination Not Needed": Govt Tells Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Education has submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court, asserting that scrapping the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) results entirely would severely impact the numerous honest candidates who took the exam in 2024. This statement comes amid growing concerns and allegations of irregularities surrounding the conduct of the examination.

The Ministry of Education emphasized in its affidavit that the integrity and efforts of genuine candidates must be protected.

“Scrapping the NEET results would negatively impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of honest candidates who have diligently prepared for and taken the examination.”

– the Ministry stated.

The government’s position is clear: a complete overhaul of the results is not warranted in the absence of substantial evidence indicating widespread malpractice.

To address the concerns surrounding the examination process, the Ministry has highlighted the formation of a High-Level Committee of Experts. This Committee is tasked with suggesting effective measures for conducting examinations by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

“The High-Level Committee has been proactive, having already held four meetings to deliberate on the matter.”

-the affidavit noted.

The aim is to enhance the robustness and reliability of the examination process, ensuring it is fair and transparent.

CBI Investigation

The government acknowledged the allegations of irregularities and has sought the involvement of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“The CBI has been instructed to investigate the full range of misconduct claims and ensure that any wrongdoing is promptly identified and addressed.”

-the Ministry affirmed.

This step is intended to thoroughly examine and resolve any issues related to the conduct of the NEET 2024 exam.

Enactment of Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act 2024

In a bid to bolster transparency, fairness, and credibility in public examinations, the Parliament has enacted the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act 2024. Effective from June 21, 2024, this legislation imposes stringent punishments for offenses related to unfair practices in public examinations.

“The Act highlights the government’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination system.”

-the affidavit stated.

Centre’s Affidavit to the Supreme Court

Amid the escalating NEET row, the Narendra Modi-led government has filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court. The Centre argued-

“There is no need to re-conduct NEET-UG 2024 as there is no evidence of large-scale irregularities in the examination.”

It also contended that a fresh exam would adversely affect the lives of lakhs of genuine candidates. The Centre further stated that it has already asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct a comprehensive probe into the entire gamut of alleged irregularities.

The government has decided not to scrap the results. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to uphold the interests of the vast majority of candidates who appeared for the exam honestly. To ensure transparency and address the allegations comprehensively, the government has constituted a High-Level Committee and involved the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The High-Level Committee will meticulously examine the allegations of misconduct and irregularities in the NEET 2024 exam. By involving the CBI, the government aims to conduct a thorough investigation to identify any malpractices and bring the culprits to justice. This step is expected to restore faith in the examination process and reassure candidates of the government’s dedication to maintaining fairness.

New Legislation to Deter Misconduct

In addition to investigating the current allegations, the government is also working on new legislation aimed at deterring future instances of misconduct in public examinations. This legislation is expected to introduce stricter penalties for those found guilty of tampering with exam processes, thereby ensuring a fair and transparent examination environment. The aim is to protect the integrity of public exams and uphold the rights of honest candidates.

The Supreme Court’s decision on this matter will be crucial, as it will determine the course of action regarding the NEET 2024 results. The Court’s ruling will not only affect the candidates but also set a precedent for handling similar issues in the future. The legal perspective will play a significant role in shaping the examination policies and ensuring justice for all parties involved.

The outcome of this case will have far-reaching implications for future public examinations. By taking stringent measures against misconduct and ensuring thorough investigations, the government aims to create a deterrent effect. This will likely lead to a more secure and credible examination process, benefiting millions of candidates who rely on these exams for their academic and professional futures.

The public reaction to the government’s decision has been mixed. While many support the move to uphold the integrity of the NEET exam and protect honest candidates, others express concerns about the transparency of the investigation process. The involvement of the CBI has been seen as a positive step by some, ensuring a fair and impartial investigation. However, there are calls for more comprehensive reforms to prevent such issues from arising in the first place.
