NEW DELHI: On Friday(12th July),The Supreme Court of India has extended the interim medical bail of Nawab Malik, a former Maharashtra Minister, by two weeks. Malik is an accused in an ongoing money laundering case. The extension was granted following a request from the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) counsel, who sought additional time to obtain fresh instructions regarding the case.
A bench presided over by Justice Bela M. Trivedi agreed to the Enforcement Directorate’s counsel’s request and adjourned the proceedings for two weeks.
“In response to the Enforcement Directorate counsel’s request for an adjournment to obtain fresh instructions in the case,”
-stated the bench, as it directed the extension of the interim relief for Malik.
Earlier this year, in January, the Supreme Court had ordered an extension of the temporary bail granted to Malik on medical grounds for six months. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate, communicated that the federal anti-money laundering agency had no objection to the Supreme Court extending Malik’s interim bail.

“The federal anti-money laundering agency did not object to the Supreme Court extending Malik’s interim bail,”
– he submitted.
Before this extension, the Supreme Court had extended the interim relief for three months, considering Malik’s chronic kidney ailments and the lack of improvement in his medical condition.
“Malik suffers from chronic kidney ailments, and his medical condition has not improved,”
-the court noted during that extension.
Nawab Malik was initially granted temporary bail by the Supreme Court in August last year, purely on medical grounds. The bail was for a term of two months, with terms and conditions determined by the trial court.
“In August last year, the Supreme Court temporarily released Malik on bail for two months solely on medical grounds,”
-stated the court’s order.
The Enforcement Directorate arrested Nawab Malik in February 2022 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The arrest was linked to a money-laundering case that arose from an alleged under-valued property deal with underworld connections.
“In February 2022, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the senior political leader of the state under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with a money-laundering case related to an alleged under-valued property deal with underworld links.”
– explained an ED official.
