"You cannot take the Court for a ride. My personal credibility is at stake": CJI Criticises Multiple Mentions of Same Case

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud voiced his concerns regarding a growing trend in the legal community, where multiple counsel are mentioning the same case in an attempt to expedite its listing.

The CJI addressed this issue in open court, making it clear that such tactics would not influence the listing of cases under his leadership.

Highlighting his role and the discretionary powers vested in him as the CJI, Chandrachud stated,

“This is a new practice. Different counsel mention same case for listing and once a judge blinks, you get some date. This is the practice which is emerging.”

He stressed that even the limited discretion he holds as the Chief Justice would not be employed to favor such actions.

He further elaborated,

“A little bit of discretion which I have as the CJI will never be exercised in your favour.”

The CJI emphasized the importance of following proper procedures in the court and underscored that the credibility of the judiciary, as well as his own personal credibility, is at stake.
