NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court, on Friday( 8th Nov) agreed to examine audio recordings that allegedly implicate Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in the communal violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, also requested details about the source and authenticity of the recordings from the petitioner, the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust.

“We allow the petitioner to submit material verifying the clip’s authenticity,” noted the Court, with the petitioner’s counsel confirming the submission of the recording.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioner, claimed that the whistleblower recorded the Chief Minister acknowledging his role in fueling insurgency and allowing the looting of arms.

“He permitted the looting of arms and ammunition. How can the state investigate itself in this matter?” Bhushan questioned.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central government, strongly opposed the plea, arguing that the petitioner’s intent was to “keep the fire burning,” despite the ongoing probe.

“The Chief Minister has met with Kuki MLAs to promote peace, but the whistleblower seems intent on stoking unrest,”

he contended, suggesting the petitioner should approach the High Court instead.

Nonetheless, the Court decided to review the recordings and their authenticity.

As the hearing concluded, SG Mehta objected to the Court’s stance.

“With a porous border and uncertain conditions, it’s hard to gauge the situation on the ground. My lords are in ivory towers—no offense intended,” he commented.

In response, CJI Chandrachud asserted, “We are aware of the events in Manipur and do not take this lightly. We are not detached, which is why we are examining this matter instead of dismissing it.”
