Today, 7th April, A bench led by Chief Justice of India allows retired police officer overseeing the Manipur violence probe to travel overseas. The former cop, appointed to monitor the investigation, granted permission to travel abroad by the Supreme Court. This decision comes amidst ongoing hearings related to the Manipur violence cases. The CJI led bench supervising the investigation took the retired officer’s travel plans into account.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court approved the request of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar to travel abroad.
He appointed by the Court to oversee investigations into cases related to ethnic violence in Manipur. The permission was granted by a three-judge panel led by Justice D Y Chandrachud, considering Padsalgikar’s letter requesting to travel to the United States and Europe.
Padsalgikar, who previously served as the Director General of Police in Maharashtra, is tasked with monitoring the investigations conducted by the CBI and Manipur Police SITs.

The bench, which includes Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra stated,
“Dattatraya Padsalgikar has mentioned his intention to travel to the US and Europe for personal reasons from May 1, 2024, to May 29, 2024. The request has been noted, and the officer has been authorized to travel overseas”
The hearing for cases related to the Manipur ethnic violence rescheduled for April 29.
Last year on August 7, the Supreme Court appointed Padsalgikar to oversee the CBI investigation into instances of sexual violence in Manipur.
Padsalgikar, a 1982 batch IPS officer, served in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before becoming Mumbai Police commissioner on January 30, 2016. He held this position until June 29, 2018, after which he became the Maharashtra DGP.
Later, on October 29, 2019, he appointed as the Deputy National Security Advisor.

Additionally, the Supreme Court also established a three-member committee of retired high court judges, led by former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief to supervise the relief and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of the Manipur violence.
