NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India is now looking into a petition that challenges a recent order from the Uttar Pradesh government. This order says that food vendors and shopkeepers along the Kanwar Yatra route must put QR code stickers on their shops or banners.
When these QR codes are scanned, the names and other personal details of the shop owners can be seen.
This matter came up in the Supreme Court today, and the bench, which includes Justices MM Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh, has issued a notice to the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The court wants both states to reply to the petition.
The case will now be heard again on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. Till then, the states have been given time to file their responses. The Supreme Court has also asked that all similar applications and petitions related to this issue be combined and heard together.
The petitioners have told the court that the new QR code order from the UP government goes against a previous order by the Supreme Court from last year.
In that earlier decision, the Supreme Court had clearly said that food sellers only need to inform customers about what food they are offering.
They do not need to give out their names or the names of their workers.
One of the senior lawyers for the petitioners, Sr. Adv. Shadan Farasat, told the bench:
“The application is time‑sensitive; it should be taken up next week.”
The lawyer appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government replied:
“A fresh application has been filed, and we will be submitting our reply.”
Another lawyer pointed out that:
“UP has no power, mechanism, or system in place.”
To this, Justice Sundresh responded:
“That’s fine, we’ll hear it. We’ll list it next Tuesday.”
CASE TITLE:
