New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium decided to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court back to his original position at the Allahabad High Court.

This decision follows a controversy sparked by a fire at the judge’s residence, during which firefighters allegedly discovered a large amount of cash.

Notably, the Collegium reached this conclusion after convening for two meetings one on March 20 and another on March 24.

The Collegium in a release on the Supreme Court’s website, stated,

“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad,”

A fire at Justice Yashwant Varma’s residence on the evening of March 14 inadvertently led to the discovery of unaccounted cash by firefighters,.

Additionally, a video showing the recovery of cash was reportedly shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the High Court. On the day of the incident, Justice Varma and his wife were away in Madhya Pradesh, leaving only his daughter and elderly mother at home when the fire occurred.

Following the allegations, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an internal investigation on March 21 and formed a three-member committee to look into the matter.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court released a report from the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court regarding the incident, along with Justice Varma’s response.

Born in 1969, Justice Varma earned his LLB from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh and began practicing law in 1992. He served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh.
