At Delhi University’s inaugural constitutional lecture series, Supreme Court Judge Justice P S Narasimha delivered a profound address highlighting the deep connection between citizens’ rights and duties. He described “Kartavyam” (duty) as a “Sadhana”, or spiritual discipline, essential for achieving societal harmony. Drawing a powerful analogy, he likened rights and duties to the sun and sunlight—inseparable and life-giving. His remarks emphasized the need for a balanced approach to constitutional values.

New Delhi: Supreme Court Justice P S Narasimha addressed the inaugural conclave of ‘Kartavyam,’ a constitutional law lecture series organized by Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre.

According to a release, Justice Narasimha highlighted the interconnectedness of rights and duties, drawing on Indian traditions, constitutional values, and the insights of prominent thinkers like B R Ambedkar.

The release noted,

“Justice Narasimha described ‘Kartavyam’ as a ‘sadhana’ (spiritual discipline to attain perfection or a goal), while linking rights and duties of citizens to the sun and sunlight, both being inseparable and life-giving,”

Attorney General N Venkataramani, who also spoke at the event, advocated for “a reimagining of legislation through a duty-oriented lens, even suggesting a revolutionary human duties act.”

The lecture series was launched by Delhi University to commemorate 75 years of the Constitution.

The initiative aims to realign legal and social thought with principles of responsibility that are deeply rooted in Indian philosophical and constitutional traditions.

Spanning from April 4, 2025, to January 2026, the series will feature over 30 distinguished scholars, judges, and advocates.

The release added,

It will include collaborative sessions with both central and state universities, national law universities, and statutory bodies such as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW)

The constitutional lecture series initiated by Delhi University aims to bridge the gap between academic legal studies and practical constitutional law. Through lectures, debates, and interactive sessions with legal luminaries, the series aspires to offer students and scholars fresh perspectives on the Indian Constitution.

The Faculty of Law at DU, one of the premier legal institutions in the country, has played a pivotal role in nurturing many of India’s legal minds. This lecture series is yet another step toward enriching constitutional scholarship and encouraging critical thought among future lawyers, judges, and policymakers.
