This important update was announced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi began his journey as a judge in the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. Later, on January 4, 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court. However, on November 8, 2021, he was sent back to the Calcutta High Court, where he has been serving ever since.
With over 13 years of experience as a High Court judge, Justice Bagchi has gained vast legal expertise.
Now, as he steps into the Supreme Court, he will have a long tenure of more than 6 years. Furthermore, in May 2031, after Justice KV Viswanathan retires, he will take over as the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
However, his term as CJI will be relatively short, as he is set to retire in October 2031.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi’s appointment holds historical significance because he will be the first Chief Justice of India from Calcutta after the late CJI Altamas Kabir, who retired in 2013.
With his inclusion, the Supreme Court, which has a total sanctioned strength of 34 judges, will now have only one vacancy left.
