NEW DELHI: Today(on 8th July), From the High Court to the Supreme Court, numerous cases emerge that not only captivate the public but also leave judges astounded. These cases often dominate headlines for extended periods. Occasionally, the nature of these cases compels judges to voice their displeasure, particularly when courtroom decorum is compromised. A notable instance of this occurred on Monday when a Supreme Court judge was visibly upset by a man’s inappropriate attire during a virtual court session.
According to a legal website dedicated to reporting on court proceedings, an incident took place in Court 11 on Monday. A man, participating via video conferencing, appeared on screen wearing a vest. The moment Justice B.V. Nagarathna noticed him, her displeasure was evident.
She immediately inquired-
“Who is this person in a vest?” Justice Datta asked, expressing her concern. “Is he a party to the case or what?”
Justice Nagarathna’s irritation escalated as she demanded-
“Remove him immediately. How can this be allowed?” She then instructed the court master, “Please take him off the call.”
This incident is not isolated. The Supreme Court has previously witnessed judges expressing their dissatisfaction over inappropriate attire during virtual hearings. In 2020, a lawyer attended a virtual hearing without a shirt, prompting a stern reaction from the bench.

Justice L. Nageshwar Rao and Justice Hemant Gupta remarked-
“What kind of behavior is this? It’s been seven to eight months since we started hearings via video conferencing, yet these issues still occur.”
This period marked significant adjustments for the court due to the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitating virtual hearings.
Another similar occurrence involved a bench led by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, who at that time was not the Chief Justice. During a 2020 hearing, a lawyer appeared shirtless on the screen.
Justice Chandrachud admonished him, stating-
“I don’t like being strict with anyone, but you are on screen. You need to be mindful.”
In June of the same year, yet another instance of inappropriate attire was reported. A lawyer participated in a virtual Supreme Court hearing wearing a T-shirt while lying on a bed, which also drew the judge’s displeasure.
