Today, On 7th October, Supreme Court has referred the issue of promotion opportunities for judicial officers to a Constitution Bench. The move aims to provide clarity and a long-term solution for career progression within the judiciary.

In today’s Supreme Court hearing, judges reflected deeply on the judicial appointments and promotion systems.
The discussion highlighted the journey of many judges who join the judiciary after “a long stint of practice” and later “give up their practice to serve.”
The bench also stressed the importance of providing opportunities for talented junior civil judges to advance in their careers.
They suggested that referring the matter to a larger Constitution Bench could bring “clarity for the next twenty or thirty years,” ensuring a more transparent and structured judicial system.
The discussion came during the hearing of the judges association case.
Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai also expressed concern over the growing social media coverage of court proceedings, highlighting how such reporting could influence public perception.
On a lighter note, CJI Gavai humorously said,
“We don’t know what will be reported… I requested my learned brother to restrict that only to my ears otherwise your clients will be highly offended.”
The Supreme Court’s remarks underline both the significance of judicial career progression and the delicate balance required in managing court communications in the digital age.
