The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea challenging the conduct of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association elections and directed that poll results must not be declared for now. The matter will be taken up next in February after seeking a response from JKCA.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to examine a petition connected with the upcoming elections of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) and directed that while the election process may continue, the results must not be declared until further orders.

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta passed the direction while hearing a plea filed by several cricket clubs seeking the appointment of an independent electoral officer to prepare the voters’ list and conduct the JKCA elections strictly as per the association’s constitution.

The Bench issued notice to the JKCA and asked it to file its response to the petition. The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 2. The Court made it clear that in the meantime, although the elections can go ahead, the outcome of the polls should remain undisclosed.

The petition has also sought the appointment of a retired Supreme Court judge as the administrator of the JKCA, with full powers to take over the day-to-day functioning of the association.

The plea alleges that the current administration, being run through a sub-committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is not functioning in accordance with the JKCA constitution.

Several clubs affiliated with the JKCA have raised objections to the preparation of the electoral rolls for the forthcoming elections. They have alleged that the process violates the association’s constitution and that as many as 16 eligible clubs have been unfairly excluded from participating in the electoral process.

The Supreme Court’s intervention comes amid continuing disputes over the governance and electoral process of the JKCA, with the petitioners urging the Court to ensure transparency, fairness, and strict compliance with constitutional provisions in the conduct of the elections.
