The Supreme Court heard a contempt petition filed by the SCBA against Rakesh Kishore for allegedly throwing a shoe at CJI B.R. Gavai. Justice Surya Kant said, “We are expecting some suggestions to prevent these incidents.”
The Supreme Court of India heard a contempt petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) against Rakesh Kishore over the alleged shoe-throwing incident that targeted Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai during court proceedings.
The case was listed before a Bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi.
During the brief hearing, the counsel informed the court that
“My lords have still issued notice.”
The Bench then discussed possible measures to ensure that such acts do not take place again within the premises of the Supreme Court or any other court.
Justice Surya Kant observed,
“We are expecting some suggestions to prevent these incidents.”
He further added,
“These incidents have to be prevented inside and outside courtrooms. We will keep it in December.”
The contempt petition comes in the wake of an unfortunate episode inside the Supreme Court, where an individual allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during court proceedings, sparking outrage among lawyers and judges alike.

The legal fraternity, including the SCBA, strongly condemned the act, calling it an attack on the dignity of the judiciary and the sanctity of the courtroom.
Today’s hearing focuses on ensuring accountability and exploring preventive steps so that the decorum of court proceedings remains intact.
The Supreme Court Bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, has indicated that it will take up the matter again in December after receiving suggestions on how to avoid similar disruptions in the future.
